Larsen & Toubro set to win Rs 4,000 cr western dedicated freight corridor project

Heavy engineering major Larsen and Toubro (L&T) along with its partner Sojitz Corp, Japan, is understood to be well on track to win around Rs 4,000-crore contract on the western dedicated freight corridor, sources with knowledge of the development said.

The contract to be awarded by Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL) is for a nearly 128-km stretch between Rewari in Haryana to Dadri in Uttar Pradesh.

According to sources, this is the first composite contract being won by a single bidder in the upcoming dedicated freight corridor, and involves undertaking civil works, laying tracks, stations, signalling and telecom works. The consortium of Tata Projects, IRCON International and Mitsui and Co of Japan is said to be among the other bidders for the contract.

In 2013, L&T-Sojitz consortium won a Rs 6,700 crore worth of contract to construct 626 kilometres of a double-track corridor from Rewari in Haryana to Iqbalgarh in Gujarat via Rajasthan, across three states. In January 2016, it also won a Rs 1,213 crore electrification works contract for a 422 km section from Vadodara in Gujarat to JNPT (near Mumbai) in Maharashtra.

The western dedicated freight corridor once complete will run through five states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. It begins at Dadri near Delhi in Uttar Pradesh where a new railway line between Dadri -Rewari is being made, this will then run parallel to existing line via Narnaul, Ringas.

The other important stations on the corridor will be Phulera and Marwar Junction in Rajasthan. Palanpur, Amli Road near Sabarmati, Makarpura near Vadodara, Gothangam or Kosad will be coming up in Gujarat. From Gujarat, the corridor moves into Maharashtra with Vasai Road and then will terminate at JNPT at Nhava-Sheva near Navi Mumbai.
