Achal Kumar Joti is the new election commissioner

New Delhi: Former Gujarat chief secretary Achal Kumar Joti has been appointed as an election commissioner to the Central Election Commission (CEC), the government said in an official release on Friday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government has moved swiftly to fill the vacancy at the three-member apex body. Joti will now join chief election commissioner Nasim Zaidi at the Commission. There’s still room for another election commissioner.

Sixty two-year-old Joti served in various capacities in the Gujarat government before he retired in 2013.
