Ravneet Kaur appointed new CCI chairperson, regulator gets quorum

The appointments committee of cabinet has named Ravneet Kaur, an IAS officer of 1988 batch, as the chairperson of the Competition Commission of India (CCI).

Kaur will hold the post for a period of 5 years from the date of assumption of charge or till attaining 65 years in age.

The CCI had been without the chairperson since October 2022 and has had two rounds of applications for the past. The absence of a chairperson had left its three-member quorum short of one person. CCI, in order to clear combination applications, had to invoke the doctrine of necessity as there was a lack of quorum.

With Kaur’s appointment fulfilling the quorum, the CCI will be also able to take action against the abuse of dominance complaints it has received in the last few months.
