Maharashtra records highest one-day spike in COVID-19 cases, tally reaches 25,922; death toll touches 975

Recording the highest single-day count of 1,495 new COVID-19 cases, the tally in Maharashtra reached 25,922 on Wednesday, the official data released by the state's health department showed.

The state also reported 54 deaths, including 40 in worst-hit Mumbai, taking the death toll to 975.

A total of 422 patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the overall number of people recovered from the viral infection to 5,547 in the state, a state health official said.

There are 19,400 active cases while total people tested so far is 2,30,857.

Out of Maharashtra's 25,922 cases and 975 deaths, Mumbai alone accounts for 15,747 cases and 596 deaths.

Dharavi in Mumbai, Asia's largest slum, has recorded over 1,000 cases after 66 new cases on Wednesday, The COVID-19 tally in Dharavi stands at 1028 while the death toll in the area is 40.

Of the 54 deaths reported on Wednesday, 40 were reported from Mumbai, six from Pune, two each from Jalgaon, Solapur and Aurangabad, one each from Vasai-Virar and Ratnagiri.

Pune, another badly-hit district, has so far reported 2,830 cases and 161 deaths. Entire Pune division has reported a total of 3,606 cases and 193 deaths so far.

The Thane division, which consists of Mumbai city and Mumbai suburban areas, has 19,446 COVID-19 cases and 644 deaths.

The Nashik division has recorded 1,114 cases and 71 deaths, followed by the Kolhapur division's 130 infections and five fatalities.

The Vidarbha region has reported 408 cases and 26 deaths due to COVID-19.
