TVS Group begins EV journey with Tesla
CHENNAI: In Tesla's race into the future, there is an Indian partner fastening its belt.
TVS group's auto-component maker Sundram Fasteners has begun its electric vehicle (EV) journey with an order from Elon Musk-founded carmaker Tesla to supply key parts in gear transmission and equivalents of radiator caps in a development that the company believes will ignite its own gradual transition to the EV era.
The company's MD Suresh Krishna confirmed with ET the supply of bevel gears - teeth-edged parts mounted on the shafts in a gear system - and surge tank caps, which protect a coolant, have been going on for months now.
"We knew this was coming. Even in 2030, the prognosis is that only 8% of the vehicles in the world will be electric, but that will be the inflection point. Around 2040, that ratio will jump to 30-40% and anybody in the auto-component industry has to take that into account."
Sundram had begun 50 years ago with a team of eight.
