Live: 27 killed, over 30 injured in stampede at Elphinstone railway station in Mumbai; blame game begins
At least 27 people were killed and over 30 others injured in a rush-hour stampede on a foot overbridge (FOB) linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations in Mumbai on Friday morning.
The incident took place at around 10:30 am due to a heavy crowd at the foot-over bridge after rains.
The injured have been rushed to KEM hospital.
"15 declared brought dead," said Dr Pravin Bangar, senior medical officer, KEM Hospital.
Police suspect a short-circuit with a loud sound near the FOB led to panic and people started running, resulting in the stampede.
Officials of the railway, police and fire brigade rushed to the site to carry out rescue operations.
In videos that have been circulating, several people can be seen jumping from the foot overbridge to save their lives.
The Western Railways in a series of tweets said that the accident relief medical team is at the spot and medical assistance is being provided to injured.
"Senior Railway officers have reached Elphinstone Road station FOB to monitor relief work," Western Railways said.
The incident comes on the day when Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is in Mumbai. The Minister was scheduled to board a local train at 1:00 pm at Vile Parle station and release the new suburban time-table at a function.
