The crucial meeting of the Goods and Services Tax Council (GST Council) was held today under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The meeting was organised through video conferencing where the Centre and the state governments brainstormed on the issue of GST compensation.

However, there was no consensus among the states on several issues in the meeting. The council's next meeting will be held on October 12 for further discussion on the reduction in collections and compensation to states.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot Sunday attacked the BJP for a hurried late nigh cremation of the 19-year-old Hathras woman, who had died after allegedly being gang-raped and brutalised, terming it heartbreaking.

The cremation of the girl was conducted at 2 am at Hathras. This is heartbreaking and will be there forever in the memory of the entire country, Gehlot said.

With a spike of 75,829 new cases and 940 deaths reported in India, the country's COVID-19 count crossed 65 lakh on Sunday, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

As per the MoHFW, the COVID-19 count is at 65,49,374, including 9,37,625 active cases in the country.

The central government on Sunday said that over Rs 1,000 crore has been paid to 41,084 farmers for procurement of paddy on Minimum Support Price (MSP).

A local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manish Shukla was shot dead on Sunday night near Titagarh in North 24 Parganas district.

The incident took place on BT Road, barely a few metres away from the local police station. It is being said that Shukla was shot multiple times in the back and upper torso.
