The pace at which the NDA government is taking decisions after Bihar assembly election results is commendable and there is no doubt that the situation on the decision-making front is far better today than in the UPA government’s last 2-3 years.

The 10% government stake sale in Coal India cleared by the Cabinet on Wednesday along with a slew of other steps, will fetch about Rs 21,000 crore, if the government successfully crosses the hurdles posed by the unions like it did earlier.

Coal India (CIL), the government-owned near-monopolist in the sector, is to build 15 washeries across its various subsidiaries, through private companies under a build and operate model.

CIL currently owns 17 washeries, five for coking coal (used by the steel and cement industries) and 12 for non-coking (for producing electricity). Of the new ones, six are to handle coking coal and the other nine the other. The cumulative washing capacity is estimated at 112 million tonnes (mt), said senior CIL officials.

"We will fund 70% of the project cost through debt, which will come mostly from banks, while the rest will be through internal resources," said the executive, who did not wish to be named adding that land for the plants will be provided by the states. As a first step, Coal India has prepared a detailed project report for setting up 200 MW of solar generation capacity.

NEW DELHI: Coal IndiaBSE 1.29 % CMD S Bhattacharaya has asked employees to raise production, the key performance criterion, in sync with the company's targets as it looks at producing a billion tonnes of the dry fuel by 2020 while ensuring quality of the supplies.

"Coal production is the most important performance criterion and primarily focus should be on taking it to a higher trajectory," Bhattacharaya said in a letter dated October 19 to the CIL employees.

KOLKATA: Some 40,000 officials at Coal IndiaBSE 2.14 % have a reason to splurge this festive season. They are set to receive arrears for eight years of performance related pay which, senior Coal India officials said, will vary from Rs 3 lakh on the lower side to Rs 15 lakh for the top rung.

Officers of the loss-making subsidiaries of the state-run company would benefit the most, as they would be eligible to also receive an additional pay revision, which has been implemented in its profit-making units.
