Amid stand-off with iPhone maker Apple, Trai has inserted a clause in its proposed regulation on pesky calls, which will make it compulsory for all devices to provide access to call logs and SMSes required for the functioning of ‘do-not-disturb’ kind of mobile apps.

“Every access provider shall ensure that all devices registered on its network shall support all permissions required for the functioning of such apps as prescribed in the Regulations 6 (2) (e) and regulations 24 (2),” Trai said in a corrigendum to draft rules on May 30.

NEW DELHI: Telecom regulator Trai on issued new draft norms to curb pesky calls and SMSes by using blockchain technology to ensure that telemarketing messages are sent only to those who have subscribed to them, and that too by authorized entities.

"Blockchain will ensure two things -- non- repudiative and confidentiality. Only those authorised to access details will be able to access subscriber details and only when they need to deliver service.

The regulator Trai is seeking details from operators about tariff plans offered by them in all telecom circles, marking the next phase of expansion for its recently-launched beta site that at present allows rate comparison for Delhi and Gujarat circles only.

NEW DELHI: The telecom regulator is considering a review of the charge that telecom operators pay each other for text messages — possibly even discarding it — a move that could trigger another clash with financially strapped older telcos.

The regulator is considering issuing a consultation paper to seek stakeholder views on revising the interconnection usage charge (IUC) for SMS, which may include the possibility of scrapping the charge altogether, people aware of the matter said.

NEW DELHI: Telecom companies have asked the sector regulator to take a pragmatic view on levying penalties, especially over marginal deviations from quality of service benchmarks as some of those may have been caused by natural events such as floods or heavy rains.

The fight between incumbent operators and Reliance Jio over points of interconnect (PoIs) — these points connect calls between two different networks — which ran full steam in the latter half of 2016, continues on the regulatory front.

Back in 2016, mobile operators were required to provide PoIs to each other on demand within a period of 90 days. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India reduced the span to 21 days in February this year.

Telecom regulator Trai is considering to impose a penalty on operators who have not met the new service quality norms for December quarter, according to sources.

"We will be imposing some penalty on those who have not met the stipulated standards," said a Trai official who did not wish to be named.

The Telecom Commission on Tuesday cleared the recommendations made by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on the regulatory framework for internet telephony services in the country. The development allows internet telephony services to be offered by an operator to its subscribers who may be using internet of other access service providers.

In a relief to incumbents, including Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular, and a setback to newcomer Reliance Jio, the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) on Tuesday imposed an interim stay on the clauses of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (Trai’s) order relating to reporting requirements and the new definition for ascertaining “significant market power” (SMP). The tribunal did not, however, grant a stay on the whole regulation on predatory pricing.

In a relief to old operators, telecom tribunal TDSAT today put an interim stay on reporting requirement of 'segmented offers' and the new definition for ascertaining 'significant market power' for predatory pricing by Trai.

The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) in its interim order today, however, placed a qualifier on the reporting requirements, saying the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will be entitled to ask for details of segmented discounts or concessions "for analysis" but that "no penalty shall be imposed on that basis" till further orders are given in the ongoing appeals by Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular.
