Maruti crosses 15 lakh units milestone in cumulative exports

The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India today announced crossing the milestone of 15 lakh vehicles in its cumulative exports.

“These vehicles have been exported to over 100 countries including Europe, Latin America and Africa. Early this year, the company’s premium hatchback Baleno, manufactured exclusively in India, became the first car to be exported from India to Japan,” the company said in a statement.

Rerouting of production, decline in some foreign markets and change of strategy have led to a fall in the share of the top passenger vehicle (PV) exporters of the country.

The share of Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki and Nissan, the top three carmakers who control 86 per cent of PV exports, have collectively seen their share fall by a third to 53 per cent during the last three years.

Maruti Suzuki’s spares and accessories segment is growing at a significantly higher rate than car sales. The country’s largest carmaker’s domestic volumes grew around 11 per cent last year. But its auto parts segment posted a strong growth of 19 per cent. This has become a revenue-spinner for the company, earning ~5,571 crore in FY16. Nearly one-tenth of the company’s revenue of Rs 58,208 crore last year came from spares and accessories.

At the company’s 35th annual general meeting, chairman R C Bhargava (pictured) said a proposal to this effect will be placed before the board for consideration. Bhargava was responding to a query from one of the shareholders.

Automobile major Maruti Suzuki’s national foray into the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment will have to wait for the next financial year, as the company is limiting its newly founded LCV arm to pilot testing in five states in the current financial year.

The company is currently piloting this vehicle in Punjab, Gujarat and West Bengal and it plans to introduce the vehicle in Rajasthan and Haryana. The passenger cars major plans to open about 50 showrooms for the new commercial vehicle, Super Carry, which it plans to scale up depending on the response from the market.

Country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Thursday posted a 12.2 per cent rise in total sales in August at 1,32,211 units as against 1,17,864 units in the same month a year ago.

The company's domestic sales for the month stood at 1,19,931 units, up 12.3 per cent from 1,06,781 units in August 2015.

Maruti Suzuki shares surged over 3 per cent on Tuesday after the company launched limited edition model of its popular hatchback – sporty Swift Deca. The petrol variant of the car – Swift Deca Edition VXi- is priced at Rs 5.9 lakh, while the diesel variant – Swift Deca Edition VDi – is price at Rs 6.8 lakh.

At 3.06 pm, Maruti Suzuki shares were trading 2.88 per cent up at Rs 5071.20. The scrip opened at Rs 4950 and touched a high and low of Rs 5104.90 and Rs 4950, respectively. Sensex was trading 415.73 points up at 28,318.39.

It plans to hire about 2,000 ITI students in the current year from the hundred ITIs with which it has tied up, significantly more than 1,400 students it hired last year. Another 1,500 students will be absorbed from other ITIs.
