NEW DELHI: Toyota and Suzuki’s tie-up for cross-badging of cars is set to result in a high-pitched battle between the two Japanese companies in the Indian market. Toyota, which will start selling Suzuki’s Brezza mini SUV and Baleno compact from next year as part of the ambitious deal, has said that it will aim to maintain the pricing on the cars even while giving them a new look on the exterior and the interior.

Maruti Suzuki India's(MSI) entry-level hatchback Alto retained its status as the best selling passenger vehicle in India in 2017-18, leading the company's dominance with seven of its models featuring in the top ten list.

According to data by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Hyundai Motor India Ltd's (HMIL) three models made it to the list.

Maruti Suzuki India sold more utility vehicles (UVs) than Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) in 2017-18 to emerge the top player in the domestic passenger vehicles market with a share of 50%. Its share in 2016-17 was 47.4%.

Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) data released on Tuesday showed Maruti’s total sales of UVs in 2017-18 was 253,759 units, giving it a market share of 27.53% up from 25.7% in 2016-17.

Maruti Suzuki, which commands 50% share of the market, has closed the year with 13.8% growth in passenger vehicles sales at a record 1.64 million units in domestic market.

MUMBAI: Maruti SuzukiBSE -1.61 %'s premium hatchback Swift is close to earning the tag of the Indian car that logged 100,000 bookings in the shortest time — just a little over two months — trumping compact sedan stablemate ‘Dzire’, which had touched the milestone in 12-14 weeks.

Bookings for the third-generation Swift had opened on January 18. By end of business hours on Friday, its pan-India bookings crossed 90,000 units, according to data shared by Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest passenger carmaker which is the largest volume contributor for Japan’s Suzuki Motor.
