The Madras High Court on Wednesday dismissed petitions by Hyundai and BMW questioning the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) powers to expand the scope of investigations beyond the limit of the original complaint.

Hyundai Motor Co said it will lower the price of its Tucson fuel cell electric vehicle by 43 per cent in South Korea and consider cutting prices of the car overseas to compete with models from the likes of Toyota Motor Corp.

The South Korean automaker, the world's fifth biggest when paired with sister Kia Motors Corp, hopes to popularise fuel cell cars in its home market by cutting the price of the Tucson ix to 85 million won ($77,189).

The company had sold 49,078 units in the same month last year, it said in a statement.

In the domestic market, Hyundai sold 32,504 units last month as compared to 28,345 units in December 2013, up 14.7%.

Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors on Monday raised their target for 2014 global sales to at least 8 million vehicles, anticipating record-high China sales to offset slowing growth in the United States and Europe.

The South Korean automakers, which together rank fifth in global vehicles sales, said in a statement the new sales target would represent an almost 6% increase from last year.

Maruti Suzuki India’s grip on the country’s car market tightened in October with six of its models, including the newly launched mid-sized sedan Ciaz, featuring in the top 10 selling brands in the month.

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Association (SIAM) while entry level model Alto continues to lead the best selling model chart, Maruti’s compact sedan Dzire moved up to the second spot ahead of popular premium compact Swift, which has slipped to the fourth spot behind WagonR.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited aims to design and develop its own car, without much support from its Japanese parent Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), by 2017, an official said.

India’s largest carmaker, which draws much of its technical know-how from SMC, is keen on its 2,000-strong research and development (R&D) team making a car.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) today reported 11.54% increase in total sales at 56,010 units in October 2014.

The company had sold 50,212 units in the same month last year, it said in a statement.
