InterGen was a joint venture of Shell Oil and Bechtel, which sold their company stakes in 2005 to Highstar Capital (a part of AIG) and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan for $1.75 billion. In 2008 GMR Infrastructure acquired Highstar Capital's 50% stake for $1.1 billion.

International Power plc develops, owns, and operates primarily fossil-fueled power plants worldwide. International Power plc has interests in more than 45 power stations in 20 countries, which collectively have a gross generating capacity of more than 33,000 MW. International Power plc also has interests in power plants under construction and it is expanding through acquisitions. International Power sells its electricity through supply contracts and merchant marketing and trading transactions. The company's support activities for its core operations include coal mining, gas transportation, steam supply, and water desalination.

Invenergy LLC operates about a dozen wind energy generating facilities in the US, Europe, and Canada. Invenergy LLC builds, develops, and buys energy producing properties and has about 2,000 megawatts of wind energy capacity online. While wind is the focus, Invenergy also uses natural gas to produce 2,200 megawatts of energy from facilities in the US and Canada and has plans to enter the solar energy market as well. Invenergy LLC has offices in the US, Poland, and the UK. CEO and president Michael Polsky founded Invenergy in 2001.
