Rodda Paint, one of the largest paint manufacturers in the Pacific Northwest, makes paints and other coatings that it sells in its 45 stores located throughout Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. In the summer of 2004 Rodda joined forces with an even larger regional paints maker, Canadian company Cloverdale Paint. The two companies merged operations but planned to keep using separate names in their respective countries and to maintain separate management teams. Art Rodda founded Rodda Paint in 1932.

The company divides its operations among six units, the largest of which is the paints and coatings materials group, which makes additives and binders used by paint makers. The electronic materials segment makes photoresists and materials for printed wiring boards. Rohm and Haas exited its salt business in 2009 when it sold Morton Salt to German chemicals company K+S for about $1.7 billion. Dow, the nation's largest chemicals maker, owns the company.

Rust-Oleum has been fighting the spread of iron oxide for more than 80 years. The company makes paints and similar coatings that resist moisture and corrosion. Designed for materials that are exposed to the elements, including light fixtures, patio furniture, wheelbarrows, mailboxes, and window trim, Rust-Oleum products come in multiple colors and textures. It also makes paints for indoor furniture, epoxies for garage floors and truck beds, and oil finishes for wood. Originally founded in 1921 by a Scottish-born sea captain named Robert Fergusson who discovered fish oil prevented rust, Rust-Oleum is now a subsidiary of chemicals and consumer products heavyweight RPM International.

Samuel Cabot is here to protect and preserve -- your home's wooden surfaces. Cabot makes wood stains and surface preparation products, primarily for use on exteriors. Founded in 1877, the company's products include cleaners, strippers, primers, stains, and waterproofing, as well as specialized products for decks, fences, and interiors. Brands include Cabot and Problem-Solver. Customers include builders, painting contractors, interior designers, and homeowners. The company is a unit of US coatings giant Valspar. As such, Cabot products are sold largely through Lowe's stores, with whom Valspar has a strong relationship.
