Since 1947, the exclusive cars have been made in Maranello, Italy, the company's sole site, and sold through strategically selected dealerships. Fiat S.p.A. holds an 90% stake in Ferrari, Piero Ferrari, son of Ferrari's founder, owns 10%. Recognized by its rearing-stallion logo, sports carmaker Ferrari is up to speed, and then some. The Italian OEM eschews volume sales in favor of building its status brand around producing some 6,250 high-performance stylish sports cars a year, with a price tag starting at about $300,000. GT and sports models include the Italia, Scaglietti, California, and GTO. Ferrari's Formula 1 model brings a few select Ferrari drivers as close to a true racing experience as possible.

The country that gave us Sophia Loren and Leonardo da Vinci also gave us the century-old Fiat. The group's cars range from models like the popular Fiat Nuova 500 to the Alfa Romeo, Ferrari (85% owned), and Maserati brands. Fiat holds a 30% stake in Chrysler, and has management control of the US carmaker. Fiat reorganized its operations in early 2011 and sent its agricultural and construction equipment (led by 89% owned CNH Global), commercial vehicles (Iveco), and most of the rest of its nonautomobile operations to the newly created Fiat Industrial.

The Karma is scheduled to roll out in 2011 with the initial production anticipated to be 15,000 vehicles and prices starting at about $95,000. Fisker Automotive isn't just bringing a new sports car to market, it is creating the market for environmentally friendly luxury sports cars. The company's first and so far only car model, the Karma, melds performance, design, and technology to create a "green" sports car. In addition to the plug-in hybrid engine, developed by Quantum Fuel Systems, Fisker incorporates regenerative braking and solar panels that allow the car to drive emission-free for up to 50 miles a day on an overnight charge.

As one might expect, Ford Division makes Ford Motor's line of Ford-branded cars, trucks, and SUVs. Models include the Mustang, F-150 pickup, Focus, Fusion, Ranger trucks, Explorer, and the Escape. The company also produces hybrid models of its Fusion and Escape. Ford's crossover market -- vehicles that are half passenger car and half SUV -- consist of the of the Edge and Flex models. The Ford Division also offers a line of commercial trucks, including the F-Series 250 through 750 trucks and E-Series vans. Although a global company, the US acconts for about 45% of Ford's automobile sales.

Ford India makes about 100,000 vehicles per year at its factory in Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, and it sells about 20,000 vehicles a month from 130 dealerships across the country. The manufacturing plant, operating since 1996, comprises stamping operations, body and paint shops, a zone for interior trim, chassis, wheels, and fluids, as well as quality testing. While Ford says its US-manufactured trucks are "built Ford tough," the smaller vehicles manufactured at Ford India are hardly wimpy. Ford India produces vehicle bodies for several models -- the sedans Fiesta and Ikon, the Endeavour, a midsize SUV, and the small hatchback, Figo.
