Smith Consulting Architects (SCA) provides planning, architecture, and interior design for commercial projects, primarily in the San Diego area, and elsewhere in Southern California. Its specializes in projects for the biotechnology, corporate/industrial, retail, and sustainable design segments. SmithGroup is the oldest continuously practicing architectural and engineering firm in the US. Founded in 1853 in Detroit by architect Sheldon Smith, the firm partnered with engineers in 1907 to become one of the first multidisciplinary firms in the country. It also provides operations and maintenance services, oversees management and financing, and invests in infrastructure facilities. Formed in 1911, SNC acquired rival Lavalin in 1991.

SNEF has grown into a powerful business. Founded in 1905, the company (known as Groupe SNEF) specializes in climate control (HVAC), communications systems, electrical engineering, industrial processes, and security systems. Its customers include large firms, government agencies, and building administrators. Groupe SNEF works from about 100 offices in France and through more than a dozen international subsidiaries, mostly in Europe and Africa. The firm works on more than 40,000 projects a year. Among its most notable: Op�ra de Lyon; the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier; and the national stadium, Stade de France.

Southland Industries is one of the largest construction and engineering companies in the US. The employee-owned group provides design/build, electrical and mechanical engineering, electrical maintenance, plumbing, fire protection, HVAC, and facilities management services. Southland offers custom solutions for clients in the health care, life sciences, hospitality, industrial, education, government, and telecommunication sectors. Projects include the renovation of the Pentagon following the terrorist attacks of September 11, and the M Resort in Las Vegas. Founded in 1949, Southland Industries has about a half-dozen offices in California, Maryland, Nevada, and Virginia.
