Light and Power Company (CL&P) keeps the folks in the Constitution State connected. CL&P provides electric utility services to more than 1.2 million customers (more than 90% residential) in nearly 150 Connecticut communities. The electric utility, a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities (NU), has more than 235 substations, almost 280,800 transformers and owns and operates regulated transmission and distribution assets in its 4,400-sq.-mile service territory. It has more than 22,800 miles of distribution lines and almost 1,700 miles of transmission lines. CL&P's transmission assets are monitored by ISO New England.

Detroit Edison generates and distributes electricity to 2.1 million customers in Michigan. The utility, a unit of regional power player DTE Energy, has more than 11,080 MW of generating capacity from its interests in nfossil-fueled, nuclear, and hydroelectric power plants. It operates more than 44,000 circuit miles of distribution lines and owns and operates about 680 distribution substations. Detroit Edison also sells excess power to wholesale customers and provides coal transportation services.

Empire District Electric (EDE) has the sovereign authority to light up its territory. The utility transmits and distributes electricity to a population base of more than 450,000 (or about 215,000 direct customers) in southwestern Missouri and adjacent areas of Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. It also supplies water to three Missouri towns and natural gas throughout most of the state. EDE's interests in fossil-fueled and hydroelectric power plants give it a generating capacity of 1,257 MW; it also buys and sells power on the wholesale market. In addition, the company is pursuing nonregulated opportunities such as leasing capacity on its fiber-optic network.

The Jersey Electricity Company is the sole distributor of electricity services to Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands. The company's services include electricity supply and a range of building services (mechanical, plumbing, design, air-conditioning, facilities management). It also offers equipment, including space and water heaters, heat pumps, and air-conditioning and refrigeration units. It sells retail appliances through its Powerhouse store. The company has diversified into mobile phones and computers but has sold its JET telecommunications business. Jersey's government controls the utility.

Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) provides electricity to 13.3 million customers in Japan's Kansai region. The utility has a generating capacity of more than 33,850 MW, which is produced at more than 160 hydroelectric, fossil-fueled, and nuclear power plants. As deregulation takes effect, KEPCO is moving into new business arenas, including retail natural gas sales in Japan. Additionally, KEPCO is engaged in information technology, telecommunications, construction and engineering services, environmental services, home security, real estate, transportation leasing, and other energy-related operations. It has about 50 main affiliated companies, primarily in Japan.
