Ube-Mitsubishi Cement is Japan's second largest supplier of cement and a joint venture between leading Japanese materials producer Mitsubishi Materials and diversified chemical, metals, and machinery provider Ube Industries. The company markets cement and related products manufactured by its parent companies. It primarily serves customers in the construction and industrial markets. Ube-Mitsubishi also operates a cement research institute in Tokyo. In an effort to break into the potentially lucrative Russian cement market, Ube-Mitsubishi Cement began exporting cement products there in 2008 -- a first for a Japanese company.

Vianini Industria's workers could proudly proclaim "We came, we saw, we concrete." The construction company operates primarily in Italy, creating cement products including pipes and pylons for such infrastructure and public projects as railroads, utilities, and university facilities. In addition to its core Italian business, it has operations in other Europen countries and in Africa, Asia/Pacific, and the US. The group's list of clients has included rail company Ferrovie dello Stato and electric utility Enel.

Joseph Vicat, whose father invented a method of creating artificial cement, founded Vicat in 1853. The Vicat family continues to lead the company. Vicat's objectives are set in stone. The company produces some 21 million tons of cement and aggregates and 10 million cubic meters of concrete per year. Vicat operates about a dozen cement plants and grinding plants, more than 200 concrete plants, and 70 quarries in Europe, Africa, the US, and the Middle East. It also has operations in specialty chemicals and paper manufacturing, transportation, and precast concrete. More than half of Vicat's revenues come from outside of France. In 2010 Vicat expanded into India with plans to acquire 51% of Bharathi Cement.

Founded in 1819 in Vienna and traded since 1869 on the Vienna Stock Exchange, Wienerberger can look back on a great tradition. Only in 1986 the company started its dynamic expansion, which has focused on building materials since the introduction of Value Management in 1997. This transformed Wienerberger from a local Austrian brick-maker into the world’s largest producer of bricks within a few years. During this time the number of production facilities rose from 11 to a level of 229 plants in 27 countries.The construction industry was hard hit by the worldwide recession in 2009, which triggered a sharp drop in the demand for building materials. On the one hand, new residential construction is heavily dependent on bank financing and, on the other hand, consumers tend to postpone investment decisions as a reaction to the weak economy and uncertain expectations for the future. Wienerberger implemented a wide-ranging action plan to adjust capacity to reflect these developments, which also included active working capital management to reduce inventories, a decrease in administrative and selling costs and a cutback in investments to the necessary minimum.
