Southern Maryland gets it power via the South Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO), which distributes electricity to more than 147,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers in four counties. One of the ten largest electric cooperatives in the US, the member-owned enterprise gets its wholesale power supply through its membership in ACES Power Marketing. SMECO's service area includes all of Calvert and St. Mary's counties, and parts of of Calvert and Prince George's counties. Cities covered include Hughesville, Leonardtown, Prince Frederick, and White Plains.

Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency,the power provider supplies wholesale electricity to its 18 member municipal distribution utilities, which in turn distribute power to more than 109,000 retail customers. The agency's main power source is the 900 MW Sherco 3-power plant generating unit near Becker, Minnesota. Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency owns 41% of the low-sulfur Western coal fueled plant in partnership Northern States Power Company, the unit's operator. It also relies on a range of intermediate and peaking units owned by the agency's members.

Southern Nuclear Operating company, a subsidiary of Southern Company since 1990, operates six nuclear power units at three plant locations, which combined, provide about 20% of the electricity used in Alabama and Georgia. Southern Nuclear's Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant began commercial operation in 1977. The Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant and the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant are jointly owned by Southern Company's Georgia Power (50%), Oglethorpe Power (30%), the Municipal Electrical Authority of Georgia (18%), and the city of Dalton.

Southern Pine Electric Power Association (Southern Pine EPA) delivers the consumer-owned utility cooperative that serves about 65,000 members in south central Mississippi. The cooperative provides power over more than 10,000 miles of line to some 60,400 residential meters and 4,600 commercial meters. A board of directors, elected by Southern Pine EPA membership, sets the policies and establishes the business structure of the organization, which is led on a day-to-day operational basis by a general manager. Southern Pine EPA established four district offices in 1994 to enable the cooperative to better serve its large service area.

Southwest Louisiana Electric Membership Corporation (SLEMCO) is no slowpoke when it comes to serving more than 93,400 power customers in eight Louisiana parishes. SLEMCO provides regulated power transmission and distribution services via 9,000 miles of power lines to its residential, commercial, and industrial members. It also provides energy conservation and street and security lighting services. SLEMCO extended assistance to help repair the badly damaged infrastructure in parishes from New Orleans to the Mississippi border following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
