United American Healthcare (UAHC) is switching gears -- from managed care to medical device manufacturing services. However, when its contract to serve Medicaid recipients in western Tennessee was not renewed in 2009, the company went seeking alternatives. It cast its future with the 2010 purchase of California-base Pulse Systems which provides contract manufacturing services to medical device makers. More specifically, Pulse Systems provides laser-cutting capabilities and other processing technology for cardiovascular devices.

Urodynamix Technologies takes a delicate approach to monitoring urological problems. The company develops and commercializes medical imaging products used in screening, diagnosing, and treating urology-centered conditions. The company's technology is based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and is being applied to non-invasive monitoring of urinary incontinence, prostate cancer, and other urological and vascular ailments. It's bladder monitoring system has received FDA approval in the US and a CE mark in the EU. Urodynamix partners with other companies to distribute its products. Chinese pharmaceutical firm HEGLN intends to acquire the assets of Urodynamix.

Urologix's Targis and CoolWave systems are designed to treat benign prostate hyperplasia, or enlargement of the prostate. The systems use Cooled ThermoTherapy, a noninvasive catheter-based therapy that applies microwave heat to the diseased areas of the prostate, while cooling and protecting urethral tissue. The treatment, an alternative to drug therapy, does not require anesthesia or surgery and can be administered on an outpatient basis. Urologix markets its products through a direct sales force in the US, as well as through international distributors.

VacSax specializes in the design and manufacture of disposable suction products for medical wastes, for use in surgical and general hospital settings. Products include canisters, liners, filters, suction systems, tubes, vacuum devices, vomit bags, and gel (used to solidify liquid waste before suction). The VacSax liners are PVC-free and produce only carbon dioxide and water upon 100% combustion. Founded in 1996, the company currently exports to more than 25 countries around the world.

Vapotherm makes respiratory care devices to help treat chronic lung and acute breathing conditions. Its FDA-approved Vapotherm 2000i warms and saturates breathing gases through a system weighing less than six pounds. The 2000i is approved for use by patients of all ages and for use in health care facilities and at home. A second device, the FDA-approved Precision Flow is a non-invasive high flow heat and humidification device used in hospitals for patients needing breathing gases. Both can be used with either a nasal cannula; the 2000i can also be used with a transtracheal cannula.
