Cyberonics, Inc.
Cyberonics makes the first medical device to be cleared by the FDA for treating epilepsy. The company's VNS Therapy System is a pacemaker-like device implanted under the collarbone with a lead attached to the vagus nerve in the neck. The device delivers intermittent signals to the brain, dubbed vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), to control epileptic seizures. The signals can be programmed by a physician using a computer, and patients can stop or start signals with a hand-held magnet. The VNS system is also used for treatment-resistant depression, and it is being studied for conditions such as bulimia and Alzheimer's disease. In addition to the US, Cyberonics markets the system in about 70 countries around the globe.
