The Cambridge Public Health Commission (doing business as Cambridge Health Alliance or CHA) was established as a result of the 1996 merger of The Cambridge Hospital and Somerville Hospital. The health care organization operates the Cambridge Public Health Department, as well as three hospitals and about two dozen primary care practices specializing in such areas as pediatrics, senior health, family medicine, eye care, plastic surgery, psychiatry, and dentistry. The health system offers inpatient care at its three hospitals: Kent Hospital, a general acute care facility with about 350 beds; psychiatric facility Butler Hospital; and Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, which specializes in obstetrics, gynecology, and newborn pediatrics. All told, the system has more than 600 licensed beds. Butler Hospital and Women & Infants Hospital serve as teaching facilities for Brown University. Care New England also operates a home health agency and provides wellness and rehabilitation programs.
