Angiotech Pharmaceuticals is teaching old devices new tricks. The firm develops medical products that combine devices with drugs to make them more effective with fewer side effects. Its flagship product in the Pharmaceutical Technologies segment is the TAXUS drug-eluting stent, which Boston Scientific sells and for which it pays Angiotech royalties. The stent is used to open up diseased arteries, and the drug coating keeps scar tissue from forming and creating a new blockage. The company's Medical Products segment makes the Quill wound closure system and other single-use medical products for interventional radiology, ophthalmology, and surgery. Angiotech has facilities in North America and Europe.

Ansell Limited is a leading manufacturer of industrial and medical gloves, condoms (brands include Kama Sutra, LifeStyles, Mates, and Unimil), and other latex products. Besides the healthcare industry, leading markets for Ansell's gloves include semiconductor and electronics manufacturers and the food manufacturing and food service industries. Its medical gloves are marketed under such brands as Encore, Gammex, and Medi-Grip. Formerly a sprawling conglomerate, Ansell divested its non-core units in order to focus on its health care products and occupational glove businesses.

AorTech develops and manufactures medical-grade polyurethanes for use in medical devices and implants. Its products are based on the company's Elast-Eon materials which have various applications including in drug-eluting stents, in orthopedic devices (spinal discs), and for reconstructive/cosmetic uses (breast implants). The company's wholly-owned subsidiary, AorTech Biomaterials, based in Melbourne, Australia, was formed more than a decade ago to commercialize the company's range of medical-grade polyurethanes. Bluehone Investors (chaired by AorTech director Stuart Rollason) holds about 20% of the company's shares.

ApaTech has an appetite for orthopedics. The company's ApaPore product is a synthetic bone graft material used in the treatment of fractures and bone defects, as well as in spinal and joint surgeries. The company's Actifuse product is also a synthetic bone graft material, which is designed to promote bone growth. (In the US, both products are sold as bone void fillers only.) The company's headquarters and manufacturing facilities are in England, but ApaTech has operations in the US and Germany as well. US medical giant Baxter International acquired ApaTech in 2010 to gain access to the bone fusion market.

Applied Scintillation Technologies (AST) is a maker of imaging and detection products that utilize phosphor and scintillation technologies. More simply put, AST offers X-ray and other imaging devices that are used in the medical, dental, security, and instrumentation industries. Products include laser alignment devices, infrared digital cameras, phosphor screens, photometers, and radiometers. Founded in 1920, the company was originally called Levy West Laboratory and was an early maker of phosphors for X-ray machines. It was at one time a subsidiary of Levy Hill Group Plc, but members of AST's management (through an entity called TQ Scientific) bought the firm in 2007.
