San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District
Directors elected from nine districts in Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco counties oversee BART. Construction on the rail system began in 1964, and BART carried its first passengers in 1972. If you're going to San Francisco -- from Oakland, Berkeley, or another Bay Area community -- San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) can take you there. BART's trains operate from 43 stations over 104 miles of track, including 3.6 miles in a tube that goes under San Francisco Bay to link the City by the Bay with Oakland and other East Bay communities.
