The firm was founded in 1979 when husband-and-wife co-chairs Tim and Nina Zagat, both New York City-based Yale-educated lawyers, invited avid diners to rate and review the restaurants they visited. No snobby restaurant critics here. ZAGAT (rhymes with "the cat") Survey publishes restaurant guides based on the reviews of about 375,000 connoisseurs who take part in its surveys on restaurants in some 100 countries worldwide. Its approach separately rates the distinct qualities of a restaurant (food, decor, service, and cost) based on a 30-point scale. ZAGAT content is available in books, online, and on mobile devices. It has expanded to review on nightspots, hotels, attractions, and other leisure activities.
