The Western Sugar Cooperative, Inc.
At The Western Sugar Cooperative, company primary product is refined sugar. Sugar is nature’s sweetener – pure and simple, with nothing artificial added. Also known as sucrose, sugar is an important source of carbohydrates for humans and is the main carbohydrate stored by the sugar beet.
The sugar beet crop is planted in the early spring and reaches its peak sugar content in the fall. The Western Sugar Cooperative growing areas provide a high quality raw material due to the long summer days, cool nights and excellent agronomic conditions. In early fall the beets are harvested over a six-week period and stored in large field piles for processing. During the four-to-five month processing period, the plants operate 24 hours per day, seven days per week, producing pure granulated sugar from the sugar beet. The refined sugar and beet by-products are stored for year-round shipment.
