Northwest Dairy Association
From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the Northwest dairy industry was on the rise. By 1909, Washington State was one of the nation's top producers of canned evaporated milk, butter and cheese. Dairy farmers realized that teamwork was the best way to market their dairy products. The result — local county dairy cooperatives began to form.
In 1918, five Puget Sound co-ops joined marketing forces to create the United Dairymen's Association. Since the Northwest produced more milk than its citizens used, UDA worked with Seattle food broker Umberto Dickey to develop distant markets for the co-ops' manufactured products. In 1930, the UDA bought Dickey's company, Consolidated Dairy Products Company.
