From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the Northwest dairy industry was on the rise. By 1909, Washington State was one of the nation's top producers of canned evaporated milk, butter and cheese. Dairy farmers realized that teamwork was the best way to market their dairy products. The result — local county dairy cooperatives began to form. In 1918, five Puget Sound co-ops joined marketing forces to create the United Dairymen's Association. Since the Northwest produced more milk than its citizens used, UDA worked with Seattle food broker Umberto Dickey to develop distant markets for the co-ops' manufactured products. In 1930, the UDA bought Dickey's company, Consolidated Dairy Products Company.

In 1915, Peter J. Oberweis found that he had too much milk so he began selling it to neighbors. In essence, the family dairy business that now spans almost 100 years had begun. The Oberweis family has been delivering milk to homes since 1927 when Peter bought a half partnership in the Big Woods Dairy. A few years later he bought the entire enterprise, renamed it Oberweis Dairy and his high school son Joe left school to help out. During the Depression refrigeration was inefficient. Milk could be safely kept only a few days thus necessitating daily home delivery.
