Forget Idaho. County Super Spuds has been growing Maine potatoes for five generations. The company operates through three subsidiaries -- the 500-acre Sunday River Farms (bought in 2004) grows the potatoes, JDR Transport (launched in 1992) ships them to food processors such as Penobscot McCrum, which was also bought in 2004. County Super Spuds is owned by the McCrum family. The company is located in Aroostook County, in northeastern Maine near the Canadian border, which was known as the Potato Capital of America in the early 20th century.

The fresh produce grower and distributor also supplies radicchio, cactus pears, and several varieties of lettuce. D'Arrigo Bros. serves customers in the retail food, foodservice, and the food wholesale sectors. The company, which farms some 24,000 acres, was founded by brothers Andrea and Stefano D'Arrigo in 1923. It began using the Andy Boy brand name, featuring Andrea's three-year-old son, Andrew "Andy" D'Arrigo, in 1927.

Chew 'em up or spit 'em out -- Dahlgren & Company processes and sells raw, roasted, shelled, and unshelled sunflower seeds. It offers standard, non-GMO, certified organic and certified kosher seeds. The company also provides custom processing (hulling, shelling), flavoring, and packaging services. Dalghren's customers include snack, baking, cereal, and food-ingredient manufacturers in the US and Canada, as well as in more than 30 other countries throughout the world. It also processes soy nuts, flax, and millet, as well as packaging sunflower seeds and chips for birdseed suppliers. The company operates four production sites.
