The New York Academy of Medicine

The New York Academy of Medicine schools the world on urban health issues. The not-for-profit institution focuses on epidemiologic, health policy, and public health studies with an emphasis on disadvantaged urban populations. The Academy hosts educational conferences and symposia on issues like HIV/AIDS, asthma, substance abuse, and mental health, as well as offering continuing medical education for professionals. The Academy also supports one of the largest privately-owned medical libraries in the world with 800,000 books, some 400 journal subscriptions, and more than 50,000 rare books and manuscripts. The Academy was founded in 1847 by a group of NYC doctors to reform the medical profession and public health.
