Carnegie Institution of Washington
Carnegie Institution of Washington supports scientific research in several areas, including embryology, ecology, geophysics, plant biology, and terrestrial magnetism. It also operates two large telescopes at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. The institution, funded primarily by an endowment of about $580 million, was established in 1902 by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie (whose other philanthropic endeavors included the Carnegie Corporation of New York and Carnegie Mellon University). In 2007 the adopted the name the Carnegie Institution for Science to distinguish itself from other Carnegie endowed non-profits and to clarify the organization's mission to pursue scientific knowledge.
