Direct Relief was founded in 1948 by Estonian immigrant William Zimdin.

Dress for Success has assisted some 450,000 low-income women worldwide by providing each client with a suit to wear to a job interview and an additional suit after she lands the position. The not-for-profit organization also offers them support in developing their career skills and networking through a membership in the Professional Women's Group. Dress for Success, which relies on donations and volunteer help, operates from offices in about 90 cities. Dress for Success has more than 100 affiliates in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Poland and the West Indies. Former executive director Nancy Lublin founded the organization in 1997 with an inheritance from her great-grandfather, Poppy Max, an immigrant from Eastern Europe.
