Milken Family Foundation
Former investor Michael Milken is behind the foundation that helps to give back. The Milken Family Foundation funds awards and grants in the areas of education and medical research. Its $25,000 Milken Educator Award is given to up to 80 teachers, specialists, and principals annually. Other initiatives include the Teacher Advancement Program, a teacher recruitment and development program, and the Milken Festival for Youth, which funds community service opportunities for primarily disadvantaged students. Brothers Lowell Milken (the organization's chairman) and Michael Milken (a trustee; also famously indicted on racketeering charges in 1989 after amassing a fortune on junk bonds) started the foundation in 1982.
