Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas
The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (known as Metro in its hometown) provides bus transportation services for passengers in Houston and surrounding Harris County communities. The agency's fleet includes more than 1,200 buses. Metro also provides transportation for people with disabilities who are unable to ride buses and oversees high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes and park-and-ride lots. As an alternative to Houston's car-clogged streets, Metro has developed a light rail system. Only 7.5 miles long, the fledgling rail system connects Houston's downtown, midtown, the museum district, and the Texas Medical Center. Metro began operations in 1979.
