On its own and through contractors, Metro maintains a fleet of more than 2,600 buses that serve about 190 routes. About 1.2 million passenger boardings take place on a typical weekday. Metro's rail system spans about 75 miles and incorporates more than 60 stations; weekday boardings average about 260,000. In addition, Metro helps pay for car pool lanes and bicycle paths. A board made up of elected officials and appointees oversees the agency.
