Election Commission issues show-cause notices to centre, BSP

New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday issued show-cause notices to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the centre and the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) over controversies relating to a sports felicitation event and cash deposits during the demonetisation drive, respectively.

An event organized by the ministry of home affairs (MHA) and ministry of development of north-eastern region to felicitate sportspersons from the region who participated in the Rio Olympics last year has come under the Election Commission’s scanner. The election watchdog has asked both ministries to explain why no prior approval was taken for holding the event.

Five of the nine sportspersons felicitated in the function were from poll-bound Manipur. EC has asked the BSP to explain contributions received in cash by the party and deposits made in its bank account, referring to a petition filed in the Allahabad high court that claims a “huge amount of money” in Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes was deposited in the account after the notes were invalidated on 8 November. BSP, one of the contenders in the Uttar Pradesh state assembly election, has to respond by 15 March.

Two phases of polling in Manipur and the last two phases of the seven-phase assembly election in Uttar Pradesh are due on 4 March and 8 March.
