Maruti Suzuki to ferry cars via waterways
NEW DELHI: In a first, Maruti Suzuki will start transporting its cars through National Waterways-1 (on River Ganga) from Varanasi to Kolkata. Cars are proposed to be transported from Varanasi to Kolkata on NW-1as a pilot run which is scheduled for Friday.
The requirement of logistic support for rolling in and out of cars from the vessels to shore and vice-versa has been done in a trial run at Kolkata. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Maruti Suzuki for transportation of cars on a pilot basis through inland waterways.
Shipping and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari will be in Varanasi on Friday to launch the pilot run. Gadkari had earlier said that freight transportation companies in India need to understand that the cost of transportation through waterways is less than even 50 paisa.
Gadkari is developing 111 rivers as inland waterways. Inland Water Transport (IWT) mode is recognised as a cost effective, fuel efficient, environment friendly and safe mode of transport especially for hazardous goods and over dimensional cargo.
As per a RITES report of 2014 on Integrated National Waterways Transportation Grid, the important benefits of IWT mode compared to rail and road transportation are as one litre of fuel moves 24 tonne/km on road, 95 tonne/km on rail and 215 tonne/km on IWT. Also, the cost of developing waterways is much lower than rail and road.
