Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that there would be no dilution in the reservation policy for Dalits and the downtrodden.
He was delivering the Ambedkar Memorial Lecture at Vigyan Bhavan. He also laid the foundation stone for a memorial for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in New Delhi.
"Untruths on reservation is being spread by opponents for political reasons. There has been no damage done to quota during the BJP governments," he said.
During the 2015 Bihar assembly polls, Mr. Modi had expressed the same sentiment, saying no party could afford to make any change in the reservation policy enshrined in the Constitution.
Earlier in February 2016, Jats in Haryana violently agitated, seeking reservation under the Other Backward Classes(OBC) category. Ten people were killed and more tha 150 injured in the violence. They had been promised that the Economically Backward Category (EBC) quota will be increased from 10% to 20% by the state government.
The Patel community in Gujarat had also previously agitated, demanding reservation for the community.
