New Delhi, Feb. 5 (PTI): Online retailer Snapdeal has decided not to renew its contract with brand ambassador Aamir Khan, recently dropped as the face of the Incredible India campaign by the Narendra Modi government after he spoke out against intolerance.
The contract expired on January 31 and Snapdeal has not renewed it, sources said.
When contacted, a Snapdeal spokesperson said: “We would not like to comment on this.”
The actor was not available for comment either.
Aamir had come under attack from Sangh parivar leaders and supporters in November after he said that his wife Kiran Rao wondered if they should move out of the country because of the atmosphere of intolerance. Many protesters deleted the Snapdeal app because Aamir was its brand ambassador. The company then distanced itself from his statement.
Actress Vidya Balan has come out in support of her industry colleagues speaking out on intolerance. Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar had also come under vicious attack for speaking their mind.
“We all have freedom of expression. Whether you are working in a factory or in films... you should have the right to say what you want to,” Vidya said. “...no one is making irresponsible statements. I can have an opinion and I can express it... you may find it wrong but as long as I find it right I should be able to express it. You have the right to oppose it, that is absolutely healthy,” she added.
