M&M, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota move SC on New Delhi's ban on diesel vehicles
Aggrieved carmakers have joined hands and moved the Supreme Court against Delhi government's order the ban on diesel vehicles registration.
On Monday, Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz moved the Supreme Court seeking a modification in the order calling for a ban on the registration of diesel cars/ SUVs above 2,000 cc engine in the NCR region.
The SC issued a ban on the registration of any new diesel cars in the state and the NCR region till March 31 to curb dangerously high levels of pollution.
The Court had also said that only CNG-run taxis will be allowed to ply in Delhi and NCR.
The announcement came soon after the National Green Tribunal recently sought a ban on the sale of any new diesel cars in the national capital till January 6. The NGT also directed that vehicles older than 10 years should be phased out completely.
It came along with the recently-implemented odd-even plan from the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government, which allows odd and even numbered cars to ply the roads on odd and even dates, respectively.
The SC will hear the plea on Tuesday.
Commenting on the SC order, M&M executive chairman Pawan Goenka had said that the NGT diesel vehicles ban is injustice for the entire automobile sector.
