New Delhi: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has announced a ban on sale of liquor in state from 1 April, keeping one of his pre-poll promises.
Voicing his concern for women suffering on account of alcoholism of men, Kumar said the ban was important. “We tried to impose this ban in 1977-78 as well but it was not effective. But as I had promised women of Bihar who made this complain months ago, I think this ban was important.” Kumar said while speaking at an event in Patna.
On Monday, soon after he took over as the state’s excise and prohibition minister, Abdul Jalil Mastan, said Bihar would impose a ban on liquor in state within six months.
“Kumar decided this before elections when he was travelling all across the state asking people what were their demands. That is when he promised women of Bihar, especially (from the) Dalit and backward class that he will ban liquor once his government comes to power,” said Mastan.
This is the first announcement by Kumar since he was sworn in as Bihar chief minister.
Bihar joins Gujarat, Kerala, Manipur, Nagaland and the union territory of Lashwadeep that have declared prohibition.
