Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained at Delhi airport on Saturday ahead of the party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar, as police intensified security measures across the national capital.
Delhi Police personnel boarded the aircraft carrying Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke after it landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) on Saturday.
“I have come here to be arrested; arrest me,” Dipke told the police personnel.
“This is not an arrest. Please cooperate,” the personnel responded.
Former Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, CPI-M leaders also detained
CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby and senior party leader Brinda Karat were among the Left leaders detained by Delhi Police at Jantar Mantar on Saturday during the protest demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who was also detained, accused the Centre of suppressing democratic rights, saying that repression would not weaken people’s resolve to defend the Constitution and the right to vote.
Tushar Gandhi, others detained in Mumbai ahead of solidarity protest
Mumbai Police on Saturday detained activist Tushar Gandhi and others ahead of a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan in solidarity with the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and head of the organisation Hum Bharat Ke Log, was picked up from Bandra and taken to DN Nagar police station, an official said.
Gandhi had shared a poster on X urging citizens to join the protest gathering at August Kranti Maidan at 3.30 pm.
Activist Feeroz Mithiborwala was also taken into custody from his residence and shifted to the MIDC police station.
Earlier, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee Delhi Police also detained and was put into house arrest at his residence in Gurugram’s Sector 56 ahead of the proposed protest at Jantar Mantar, news agency PTI reported on Saturday, citing police sources.
Rathee had arrived to participate in the demonstration, amid heightened security arrangements across the national capital.
Delhi Police had earlier denied permission for the protest, citing security concerns and procedural requirements. Police personnel have been deployed at key locations, while preventive detentions have been carried out to stop protesters from reaching the demonstration site.
According to the report, police have detained around 200 protesters so far from various locations in the New Delhi area.
