Jayalalithaa expected to be elected as AIADMK's leader on May 22

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) headed by J Jayalalithaa has asked all party MLAs to be present in Chennai on May 22 to elect the leader of the State Assembly.

Meanwhile the suspense continues on when and whether Jayalalithaa can return as the Chief Minister, considering the oppositions in the State have said the Order passed by the Karnatka High Court , acquitting her from a disproportionate asset case, having arithmetic errors.

It was reported that Karnataka's Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) BV Acharya has favoured appealing against the acquittal of Jayalalithaa and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has tweeted, "I have decided to file a SLP (Special Leave Petition) in SC (Supreme Court) after June 1st if Karnataka Government does not file. So no need to go to KHC (Karnataka High Court)."

On the other hadn, AIADMK's mouth piece Jaya TV on Friday said that the party MLAs meeting will be organised on May 22nd at the Party Head office at 7 am at Chennai. All the MLAs have been informed to participate without fail.

A source at AIADMK who got direct access to the Jayalalithaa's legal team said that if the judgement is studied properly, the amount which the Justice C R Kumaraswamy has mentioned "more or less tallies." However, the judge has considered money from nationalised banks without including the funds received from private financiers in the table.

While in the order, the learned Judge has mentioned about the subscription scheme of Namadhu MGR, a publication acting as mouthpiece of AIADMK, and the receipt of the money raised through it, it was not clubbed in the table which has been critisised for mathematical error.

"There have been receipt of money through check, through banks, from private financiers also. If those things are taken into consideration, the figure tallies," said the source. However, the table which has become the bone of contention did not club the figures.

Further, the lower court has come to the conclusion that the amount the accused persons has to explain is Rs 53 crore, and the government has not filed an appeal on that. In an appeal on that order, one should start to look at the Rs 53 crore figure, rather than the Rs 66 crore, they said. Sources further added that in the appeal, the Justice has taken only two figures - on construction and on marriage of V N Sudhakaran - into its consideration for scrutiny, while there were other things also which would have been considered.

They are confident that the mathematical error in the order would be looked into by the Karnataka High Court and will come up with a corrected order.

It may be noted that the AIADMK has said that the allegations of mathematical errors are attempts of opposite parties to curb the celebrations related to Jayalalithaa's acquittal. The party supremo, while met the Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and some of the senior ministers on Wednesday, has not come out with any comment on what the party's immediate plans are.

When asked about the allegations, C R Saraswati, party spokesperson said, "We are happy that Amma (as Jayalalithaa is referred by her party cadres) has come out clean." She added that her party chief is the only person to decide on what the party's stand would be on any issue.

On Wednesday, speaking about Jayalalithaa taking over as the Chief Minister of the State, she said, "In our party, Amma is the only one to take decisions. You don't have to wait for one week or a month for that, you will hear it straight from her in a day or two."
