Serum Institute of India to apply for license of JN.1 Covid variant vaccine

Amid rising cases of Covid-19, Pune-based Serum Institute of India may soon sell vaccines against the new JN.1 variant in India. It is preparing to apply for licensing of the vaccine, a report by Moneycontrol said on Friday.
A spokesperson of the company was cited in the report as saying that the Serum Institute currently offers a vaccine against the XBB1 variant of Covid-19. It is "very similar" to the JN.1 variant. "In the coming months, we are aiming to obtain licensure for this vaccine in India," they said.
It also said that the documents will be shared with the public once they are submitted to the regulators.
Adar Poonawalla-led Serum Institute of India had manufactured the Covishield vaccine, which was widely used during the first and second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India. It was developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca.
This comes at a time when the number of Covid-19 cases has been increasing in India, including those of the new JN.1 variant. On Friday, the country recorded 640 fresh Covid-19 infections. The number of active cases now stands at 2,997.
The death toll in India since the start of the pandemic has climbed to 533,328, with one more fatality reported from Kerala as of 8 am on Friday.
The case fatality rate stands at 1.19 per cent.
According to the Health Ministry's website, 220.67 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in the country so far.
Experts have suggested people exercise caution and maintain respiratory hygiene. Some states have also asked people to wear masks in public.

Boeing said on Tuesday that it had withdrawn its pay offer to around 33,000 US factory workers and no further negotiations were planned with their union representatives as a financially damaging strike nears its fourth week.
Boeing and the union held their latest round of negotiations with federal mediators on Monday and Tuesday, but talks collapsed and the sides were left locked in acrimonious stalemate showing no signs of being resolved anytime soon, a person briefed on the talks said.

Torrent Power shares gained 8 per cent in trade on Wednesday, October 9, and registered an intraday high of Rs 1,976.6 per share. The stock advanced after Torrent Power secured a letter of award from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution (MSEDCL). It also inked a share subscription and shareholders' agreement (SSSA) with Lakshmi Mills and Torrent Urja 17 Private Limited (TU17).
At around 9:22 AM, Torrent Power share price was up 6.85 per cent at Rs 1,941.7 per share. In comparison, the BSE Sensex traded 145.48 per cent higher at 81,780.29 around the same time.

Hyundai Motor India's IPO will open next week for subscriptions and will likely be priced in the range of Rs 1,865 to 1,960 ($22 to $23) per share, sources said on Tuesday, valuing the automaker at up to $19 billion in the country's biggest stock offering this year.
The India IPO will be Hyundai's first stock market listing outside South Korea. In India, it will also mark the first carmaker to go public in two decades since Maruti Suzuki in 2003, and comes just after Indian stock markets touched record highs and saw many companies making debuts.

In the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured the highest share of votes, although the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance ultimately won the polls. This was the first election in J&K following the abrogation of Article 370. The Congress-NC alliance is now set to form the government, having secured a majority of seats in the Assembly.
Notably, Independent candidates won more seats than Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
