On Wednesday, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) mayor Shelly Oberoi, a candidate from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was chosen by a unanimous vote. Shikha Rai, a Greater Kailash-based BJP councillor and the party's candidate for mayor, withdrew her candidature.
Shikha Rai, a candidate for the BJP, and assigned Shelly Oberoi, an AAP member, squared off in the Delhi mayoral election on Wednesday. The Civic Centre, the MCD's administrative centre, served as the location of the election. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is governed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
On February 22, Oberoi was elected mayor of Delhi for the fourth time after the previous elections were called off due to a controversy over the voting rights granted to nominated members. By receiving 150 votes, she outperformed Rekha Gupta of the BJP by a margin of 34 votes. Gupta received 116 of the 266 total votes cast.
The position of mayor in the nation's capital is filled on a rotating basis for five one-year terms: the first year is reserved for women, the second year is open to all candidates, the third year is reserved, and the final two terms are again open to all candidates.
After a fiscal year ends, the city elects a new mayor. As the Arvind Kejriwal-led party exudes confidence in the reliability of its candidates, Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal submitted their nominations earlier this month for the positions of mayor and deputy mayor, respectively, for a potential second consecutive term.
The Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, 1957 stipulates that the mayor and deputy mayor must be chosen during the very first House session following the municipal elections.
The first civic elections following the merger of the three corporations into the MCD and a new delineation process that reduced the number of wards from 272 in 2012 to 250 were held on December 4 of last year.
In the crucial elections, the AAP had triumphed. It was announced in May 2022 that the three municipal corporations in Delhi—North Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards), and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (64 wards)—would be combined.

Ahead of today's announcement of the Jharkhand Assembly elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Tuesday alleged that the Election Commission is not acting independently and is under pressure from the BJP.
In Ranchi, JMM leader Manoj Pandey expressed his worries, said, "The election is to be announced today, but BJP leaders got information about it yesterday. This is a very serious matter. Does the commission work at the behest of BJP leaders? It is a serious matter to keep the commission as a puppet."

Angel One shares have rallied by up to 9 per cent on the BSE in Tuesday’s intraday trade after the company reported a healthy 44 per cent year-on-year (YoY) jump in its consolidated profit after tax (PAT) at Rs 423.4 crore in September quarter (Q2FY25). Total income of the stock broking and allied services company grew 8 per cent YoY at Rs 1,516 crore during the quarter.
Angle One reported continued healthy performance on the back of strong client acquisition (around 3 million customers in Q2FY25), and an increase in client funding book (approximately 25 per cent sequentially).

Budget carrier SpiceJet on Tuesday said it has successfully settled a $23.39 million dispute with two aircraft lessors -- Aircastle and Wilmington Trust, days after amicably resolving a similar dispute with a US-based aircraft leasing firm, BBAM.
As part of the settlement, all ongoing litigation and disputes between the parties will be withdrawn at appropriate forums, the airline said in a statement.

Garuda Construction IPO listing today: Garuda Construction and Engineering's shares made a subdued debut on the stock exchanges on Tuesday. The company's shares listed at Rs 103.20 on the BSE, reflecting a premium of 8.63 per cent over the IPO issue price of Rs 95. On the NSE, the shares debuted at a premium of 10.52 per cent at Rs 105.

The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) of AIIMS, New Delhi, on Monday wrote an 'urgent' letter to the President of India, requesting immediate intervention in the ongoing hunger strike by doctors in West Bengal.
The hunger strike was sparked by the brutal rape and murder of a fellow resident doctor, on August 9 at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
