Holi 2021: PM Narendra Modi extends wishes as India celebrates Holi amid COVID-19 fears

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (March 29) took to Twitter to greet people on the occasion of Holi and wished that the 'festival of colours' infuses new vigor and energy in everyone's life.

"Wishing you all a very Happy Holi. This festival of happiness, exaltation, joy and glee should infuse new vigor and new energy into everyone's life," PM Modi said in a tweet in Hindi.

This year, the Holi celebrations will be restricted across India as several states have taken measures to curb the spread of coronavirus. Public gatherings and celebrations are banned in several states due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

It is to be noted that over 62,000 COVID-19 cases were recorded on Sunday (March 28) in the country. India's active coronavirus count is now nearing 5 lakh.

Maharashtra remains to be worst affected state as it reported 40,414 new coronavirus cases on Sunday. “In (Sunday’s) meeting of the (Covid-19) task force, it was suggested that very strict restrictions like lockdown should be imposed immediately,” the office of chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said in a statement. It is learnt that CM Thackeray is planning to impose lockdown “in the coming days” as he has directed the officials to prepare roadmap to implement lockdown in a phased manner.
