Delhi: Baba Ka Dhaba owner files complaint against YouTuber who made him famous, here's why
Kanta Prasad, the owner of the now-famous 'Baba Ka Dhaba' in south Delhi, has filed a police complaint against Instagram influencer Gaurav Wasan for allegedly misappropriating money that was raised to help him and his wife, police said on Sunday.
It was October 8 when the viral video of 'Baba ka Dhaba' made the rounds on social media for the first time. As soon as the video of the 80-year-old Kanta Prasad, with teary eyes crying that it was becoming increasingly difficult to sustain himself during the corona times went viral, people started donating money.
Prasad's despair had come to light when Wasan captured the eatery owner breaking down as he talked about his struggles in a video shared on the YouTuber's social media account.
Prasad, in his complaint to police, said that Wasan had shot his video and posted it on social media and convinced the public to donate money to the eatery owner.
He further alleged that Wasan "intentionally and deliberately shared only his and his family/friends bank details and mobile numbers with the donors and collected a huge amount of donation through different modes of payments i.e bank account/wallets without providing any information to the complainant," PTI reported.
The owner of the food joint also accused the YouTuber of not providing details of the financial transactions to him.
"We received the complaint yesterday at the Malviya Nagar Police Station and the matter is being probed. No FIR has been registered yet in the case," PTI quoted Atul Kumar Thakur, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) as saying.
After the video went viral, Baba ka Dhaba was the cynosure of many eyes across the country. In no time the story was endorsed by celebrities from across Bollywood, Sports and politics. From common man to the not so common, everyone took to their Social media page to share the story. There were calls by twitterati to reach the Dhaba in large numbers to help the old man.
However, October is still not over and the crowds have vanished from the Dhaba. Only a few people come here to eat food, and some only go to take a selfie.
New social media star, 80-year-old Kanta Prasad and his wife Badami Devi's stardom has gone down in less than a month's time. At present fewer people come here to eat food, more come to make videos, and take selfies.
