The rupee appreciated by 19 paise to 73.12 against the US dollar in opening trade on Thursday supported by sustained foreign fund inflows and weakness of the American currency in the overseas market.

At the interbank forex market, the domestic unit opened at 73.15 against the US dollar and inched higher to 73.12 against the greenback.

Amid the new strain of the coronavirus, no public gatherings will be allowed in Delhi on December 31 and January 1 between 11 pm and 6 am as the state government has announced a night curfew to restrict the New Year celebrations.

Amid declining cases, the new and more infectious coronavirus strain has entered Uttar Pradesh. A two-year-old girl in Meerut has been found infected with the mutated COVID-19 strain.

The girl returned from London with her parents and her sample was sent to Delhi for investigation. After this, the health department of the entire state has come into alert mode.
