Global Covid cases top 111.7 mn, death toll at 2.47 mn: Johns Hopkins

The total number of global coronavirus cases has topped 111.7 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.47 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Tuesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 111,705,909 and 2,473,742 respectively.

Shares of billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries (RIL) rose 2 per cent to hit an intra-day high of Rs 2,048.70 on the BSE after the company said it has begun the process of carving out the O2C business into an independent subsidiary and expects to get the necessary approvals for the same by the second quarter of the next financial year.

The company said the O2C business will be turned into a separate entity that will be 100 per cent owned by RIL and will result in no change in the company's shareholding.

The first shipment of AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccines by Serum Institute of India (SII) will leave for 25-30 countries under the Covax arrangement by Tuesday, said a senior World Health Organization (WHO) official.

Speaking at a webinar on Monday, Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at WHO, said, By tomorrow (Tuesday), the first shipments from India would go out from Serum Institute to 25-30 countries. Then, we hope that this will be followed by other vaccines that would be made in India.
