The rupee appreciated 3 paise to 73.08 against the US dollar in opening trade on Thursday, tracking positive domestic equities and weak American currency.

At the interbank forex market, the domestic unit opened at 73.10 against the US dollar and inched higher to 73.08 against the greenback, registering a rise of just 3 paise over its previous close.

At least four people died on the US Capitol grounds Wednesday and 52 people have been arrested, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert J Contee said Wednesday evening, after supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in an unprecedented effort to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden's election victory.

In a late-night news conference, Contee said that 47 of the 52 arrests to date were related to violations of Mayor Muriel Bowser's 6 p.m. curfew, with 26 of those involving people arrested on US Capitol grounds.

Shares of SBI Cards and Payment Services (SBI Card) rose 5 per cent to hit a new high of Rs 957.45 on the BSE on Wednesday on the back of heavy volumes. The stock surpassed its previous high of Rs 918.60, scaled on October 15, 2020.

The trading volumes on the counter jumped 1.5 times. A combined 1.95 million equity shares had changed hands on the NSE and BSE, till 10:34 am. Currently, the scrip was trading 4 per cent higher at Rs 948 on the BSE as against a 0.08 per cent decline in the S&P BSE Sensex.

Brent crude rose as much as nearly 1% to $54.09 a barrel, the highest since Feb. 26, 2020. It was at $53.87 a barrel at 0536 GMT after jumping 4.9% on Tuesday.
